Angylion (Welsh for Angels)
The Angylion project is inspired by the long-forgotten story of Margaret Sandbach, a Victorian poet whose relationship with John Gibson, inspired the famous sculptor to the great heights of his career. In his day, Gibson counted Queen Victoria herself among his many noble patrons; his work can be found today at the Houses of Parliament, The Walker Gallery, the National Museum of Wales and in private collections.
Margaret and John had an incredibly intense creative relationship expressed in her poetry and his sculpture, and in the letters which winged their way between the sculptor’s studio in Rome and the poet’s country house at Hafodunos, north Wales.
Fighting breast cancer and taking opiates to dull the constant pain, Margaret Sandbach’s work is shot through with her visions of death and angels.
Our photoshoot will take place on location in north Wales, among the ruins of Hafodunos. Here, Manuel will collaborate with artist and model Michelle Outram and award-winning production designer Tim Dickel. The resulting images will appear in the forthcoming book about Margaret Sandbach and in an exhibition which will be touring in the summer of 2014.
The book, Margaret Sandbach A Tragedy in Marble and Ink, will be published by Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust and is written by Mark Baker & Dewi Gregory. For pre-orders, please contact: stephenanthonypeckham@gmail.com
Further information about the tour will be posted on www.margaretsandbach.co.uk
